The Phaya Thai District is in Central Bangkok. As is sometimes the case due to boundary changes, Phaya Thai Road and the Phaya Thai BTS Station are actually now located in the neighboring district of Ratchathewi.
The Phaya Thai District was created in 1966 taking parts of the Dusit and Bang Kapi Districts. It tooks its name from Phaya Thai Road which at that time was the major thoroughfare through the district.
There have been many changes to the district over the years. In 1973, the district of Huai Khwang was split off. Then in 1978 boundaries between the three districts of Phaya Thai, Huai Khwang and Bang Kapi were adjusted in an attemp to balance the population between them.
Not through with the changes, the Ratchathewi district was created from the southern part of Phaya Thai in 1989. Then in 1993, some eastern parts of the district were moved to the newly created district of Din Daeng. This left Phaya Thai with only the single sub-district of Sam Sen Nai.
The east side of the district is home to the Royal Thai Army including Army Stadium and television Channel 5 owned by the military as well
There are a number of government offices in the district including the Government Savings Bank, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
Saphan Khwai is a popular location for the civilian population. The area has many shops, apartments and a Big C shopping center.
Interestingly, Wat Phai Tan is the sole Buddhist temple in the district.
