DISTRICT: Samphanthawong
POSTCODE: 10100
The sub-district of Chakkrawat is one of three belonging to the Samphanthawong District. Formerly an amphoe, it was merged along with then amphoe Sam Yaek into Samphanthawong. The area is known as Bangkok’s Chinatown. Chakkrawat has a generous border along the Chao Phraya River.
One of the condo projects taking advantage of the waterfront location is the Bangkok River Park. The building is of Roman style architecture and rises some 158 metres with 36 floors. The luxury complex was completed in 1994 and has 97 units as they are mostly quite large.
An interesting temple to visit would be Wat Chakrawatrachawat Woramahawihan. It is also known as Crocodile Temple as there are at last three captive crocodiles living here.
Chakkrawat is home to one of the nine campuses of Rajamangala University of Technology. It was previously the Rajamangala Institute of Technology but was bestowed university status in 2005.
If you like shopping then visit Sampeng Lane Market. This is an open air market in the heart of Chinatown that is open daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Prices here are considered really inexpensive especially if you want to buy in bulk.
Some of the most popular items at the market are women’s items such as sarongs, jewelry, shoes and cosmetics. Other goods include DVD copies, appliances, kids toys and a range of souvenirs.
There are also plenty of places to get your fill of delicious food. You will find Thai food and Chinese food of all types to satisfy any appetite.
