Chong Nonsi Sub District

DISTRICT: Yan Nawa

POPULATION: 48,277 (2018)

POSTCODE: 10120

Chong Nonsi is one of two sub-districts of Yan Nawa. It came to be in 1975 which is three years after Yan Nawa was established as a district.

One of the most confusing aspects of this sub-district is that it shares its name with a BTS Skytrain station. The Chong Nonsi station is located in the district of Bang Rak. At one time this bordered Yan Nawa district, and this may be how the name came to be, however in 1989, part of the district was annexed to form the Sathon District.

The confusion then arises as many tourists just refer to the area around the BTS station as if it were Chong Nonsi and that is consistent with google searches looking for things to do in or near Chong Nonsi.

There are actually many things to do and see in Chong Nonsi as it is right along the Chao Phraya river. Wat Chong Nonsi is one such place. It has a hall that measures 20 metres long and 10 metres wide. The most interesting thing are the erotic wall murals that were created using just a few colours.

It is the oldest Wat in Bangkok and was built in the second half of the 17’th century. It has three stories with the third meant as accommodation for the King. It served as the residence of King Rama V for several years.
