Phrakhanong District

SUB DISTRICTS: Bang Chak, Phra Khanong Tai

AREA: 13.986 km2 (5.400 sq mi)

POPULATION: 90,354 (2017)

POSTCODE: 10260

Located in the southern part of Bangkok on the east side of the Chao Phraya River, Phra Khanong District has a small part of its border along the river.

In 1902 it was an amphoe of then Nakhon Khuean Khan which was renamed to Phra Pradaeng. In 1927 Phra Khanong transferred to Bangkok. In its early days, Phra Khanong was quite large. However it has since been split into several smaller districts including Khlong Toei which itself split forming Watthana. The Prawet district was also split from Phra Khanong and it also split to create Suan Luang. Bang Na was the most recent district to be split from Phra Khanong in 1998.

Despite all the administration changes, many of the surrounding areas are still called Phra Khanong. As an example, the BTS Station Phra Khanong is actually in the district of Watthana. Wat Mahabut, the home of the Mae Nak Phra Khanong shrine is now in the district of Suan Luang.

The district is home to Wat Thammamongkhon which boasts the tallest chedi of its type in Thailand. The Phra Wiriya Mongkhon Maha Chedi is a square styled chedi decorated on top with 17 kg of gold and over 1,000 diamonds.

Another important temple in the community is Wat Wachiratham formerly Wat Thung which features Songkran events in April.

The district is served by two BTS Skytrain stations since 2011. These are Bang Chak and Punnawithi
