Sirirat Sub District

Sirirat Sub District

DISTRICT: Bangkok Noi

POSTCODE: 10700

Sirirat is a sub-district of Bangkok Noi and it is the area that surrounds the famous Siriraj Hospital. It is located on the southern rim of Khlong and Bangkok Noi up to the western bank of the Chao Phraya River.

Included in the district is Rattanakosin Island which highlights just how historical the area is, as this was part of Thon Buri which was the former capital of Thailand.

The Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital is the oldest government hospital in the whole of Thailand, and also to be found here is Mahidol University.

There is plenty to do and see, not least Wang Lang Ladies Market which is located in a narrow soi that connects Siriraj Pier and Arun Amarin Road. The market is full of stalls selling clothes, and fresh produce as well as sushi shops and small restaurants.

If you like visiting temples then Wat Rakhang (the temple of the bell) is a large monastery which houses many exquisite art examples. Just outside the district there is also the National Museum of the Royal Barge, which is actually a collection of eight barges.

Transportation is mainly by boat, with Wang Lang Pier being the largest pier in the area where you can get ferry services to, the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, and Sanam Luang via the Chao Phraya Express Boat Service.

There are no BTS or MRT stations in Sirirat but there are several bus routes that will take you to Taling Chan, Bangkok Yai, and Pinklao areas which have shopping malls and cinemas.

There is also Bangkok Noi Railway Station nearby which used to be Thon Buri railway station.

Housing in this part of Bangkok is reasonably affordable, and is a mixture of traditional Thai wooden architecture and townhouses.
