DISTRICT: Thon Buri
POSTCODE: 10600
Talat Phlu is a sub-district of Thon Buri. It has borders with two intersecting khlongs. This is made up of Khlong Bangkok Yai and Khlong Dan. The sub-district is bisected by Thoet Thai Road. It is one of seven sub-districts that make up Thon Buri District.
Talat Phlu has a rich history dating back over 200 years. Originally it was populated mostly with overseas Chinese and Thai-Chinese along with Muslims and Mons. When the capital of Thailand was moved to the other side of the Chao Phraya river, most of the Chinese went to live in Sampheng which today is in Bangkok’s Chinatown.
The name Talat Phu literally means Market of Betel. Betel is a plant that is an evergreen perennial with glossy heart shaped leaves. Though it is not longer grown in the area, the sub-district retains its name.
Talat Phlu is most known for its many restaurants and wide selection of street foods. Some of the notable places include Jeen Li Mi Krop. They are well known for their crispy noodles which they have been serving for over 130 years.
If you have a sweet tooth, then don’t miss Talat Phlu Sweets (Original). Here you will find many types of sweets that are not commonly found elsewhere. This is because the owners have collected over 60 years worth of recipes passed down through the family. They are open late, but some of the best desserts might sell out early, so do not miss out.
