Located at a bend Chao Phraya River, Thung Khru district was originally called Rat Burana. It was renamed to Thung Khru in 1998 moving to the Thonburi Province until Bangkok and Thonburi were merged. Thung Khru means the plain in a larger area. There are a number of Buddhist temples including Wat Thung Khru, Wat Phutthabucha and Wat Bang Mot.

Thung Khru is where the Bang Mot tangerine originated. The area features fertile soil high in potassium which give the fruit a slightly sweet and sour taste. Floods in 1967 and urban expansion have reduced the area available for planting, but there are still a number of active farms producing this special fruit.

King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) has its home here. It was founded in 1960 and is the third oldest engineering school and seventh oldest university in Thailand. Focused on teaching and research, it is one of nine national research universities in Thailand

Thonburirom park was the first public park in Thonburi. Also known as Suan Thon, the park features freely available fitness facilities, and is a popular place for visitors to do aerobics, yoga and Thai Chi. Not surprisingly, the park was originally an orchard, but following the floods the park was established in 1968. It is open every day of the week from 5:00am to 9:00pm

There is a wide range of choices for food in Thung Khru. This includes specialist coffess shops, and gourmet dining covering both Thai and international cuisines with seafood heavily featured. There are several bars that have food, drink and entertainment to suit virtually every taste.
