Watthana is one of the most visited and well known districts in Bangkok. It is maybe not known by name, but certainly by its many features and landmarks.

Established in 1998, Watthana was originally part of Kholng Toei and was created to provide better services to its population. Watthana obtained its name from Princess Galyani Vadhana. And fittingly, Vadhana or Watthana means development and it is one of the most developed parts of Bangkok.

Watthana is home to some of the finest hospitals in Bangkok including Bumrungrad International Hospital frequented by both Thai and International patients.

There are five embassies located in Watthana that span the globe from Nigeria, Nepal, Argentina, Pakistan and Norway.

Education is another feature in Watthana. In addition to Srinakharinwirot University, there are several International Schools such as The American School of Bangkok and NIST International School.

Shopping is one of the main attractions of Watthana. Sukhumvit Road from Soi 3 to SOi 15 features street vendors selling everything from T-Shirts, counterfeit DVDs and every sort of tourist trinket. At the other end of the scale is Terminal 21 located near Sukhumvit 21 and the Asoke intersection, it has become one of the major shopping centres in Bangkok.

Fortunately with all there is to see and do, getting into and around Watthana is easy as it is serviced by five BTS stations on the Sukhumvit line, an MRT station and the Khlong Saen Saep boat service.

Though considered by many to be primarily a commercial district, there are also many condominium complexes in Watthana. Expatriates from countries around the world call Watthana home.
