Wat Kanlaya is one of seven sub-districts that make up the Thon Buri District. The District which was established in 1939 was previously part of the Thon Buri Province. In 1971, Thon Buri merged with Bangkok to form the current Bangkok metropolitan area.
Wat Kanlaya is directly on the Chao Phraya river. It is home to a number of temples and schools. There are also a couple of museums and the Buppha Ram Police Station.
One of these temples, Wat Kalayanamitr is right on the river. It was established in 1825. There is a beautiful inscription which indicates that the temple was built by a close friend of the King.
The Local Museum of Bangkok is one of the two museums in the sub-district. The other is the Prayoon Bhandakhan which was opened in 2008 which was the 180’th anniversary of Wat Prayurawongsawas to which it is adjacent.
The museum has Buddhist relics that date back the 11’th century and cover several periods of history. Visitors are welcome, but no photographs are allowed.
Dhonburi Rajabhat University is located in Wat Kanlaya sub-district. The university was established in 1948 as a Vocational Teacher Training School for women. It became a full university in 2004.
They are located in a busy area and just thirty metres from a Bic C Super supercenter. The Wongwian Yai BTS Skytrain is about a five minute taxi ride away. They do not offer any student accommodation, but offer assistance to students who are looking for rooms off-campus.
