Banbat Sub District

Banbat Sub District

DISTRICT: Pom Prap Sattru Phai

POSTCODE: 10100

Ban Bot is one of the five sub-districts that make up the district of Pom Prap Sattru Phai. It extends past the Phanfa Bridge and runs along part of Khlong Maha Nak. The name Ban Bat refers to this being a village or home of Bat which are the alms or boels that monks use to receive donations.

At one end of Ban Bat is the King Prajadhipok Museum. The museum is dedicated to King Rama VII. The building that houses the museum was approved by King Rama V and formerly held by afirm of Bond Street merchants who were the only foreign business permitted on the royal road that linked the two palace districts of Bangkok. The museum includes photographs, antiques and other information about King Rama VII.

Golden Mountain Temple is a part of Wat Saket. The full name is Wat Saket Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan but is usually shortened to just Wat Saket. Its origins go back to the Ayutthaya period and was called Wat Sakae. Ring Rama I had it renovated and gave it its present name.

Phu Khoa Tong or Golden Mountain is the feature of the temple. It is a man made hill that is some 300 stairs to climb to the top. It is not overly strenous and is a popular place for locals and tourists. At the base of the stairs is a cemetary. Previously Wat Saket was a crematorium and dumping ground for victims of the plague. In contrast, at the top of the stairs you will be treated to panoramic views of Bangkok.
