The district of Pom Prapp Sattru Phai is on the eastern side of the Chao Phraya River, and though it is quite near it does not border on the river at any point. It is an older district established in 1915 during an overhaul of the two Bangkok districts into 25 different amphoes. Two of these, Sam Yot and Nang Loeng were merged to become Pom Prapp Sattru Phai.

The word Pom in Thai means fort, and indeed the district was named after a fort south of the Nang Loeng market. It was one of eight forts built during the time of King Rama V.

At a height of 63.6 metres, The Golden Mount can easily be seen from surrounding areas and is probably the district’s most recognisable feature. The chedi at the top can be reached by climbing stairs that circle the mount. The Mount was started during the time of King Rama III but not completed until the time of King Rama V.

The Mahayana temple Wat Leng Noei Yi also known as Wat Mangkon Kamalawat is well known in Bangkok’s Chinatown. There they hold the annual Chinese Vegetarian Food Festival in the 9th lunar month. In addition, in the 7’th lunar month, they hold The Krajat to collect food and other items for the poor.

The Varadis Palace was built by German architect Karl Dohring in 1911. It is set in a garden and was restored in 1966. It is home to the Prince Damrong Rachanupab Museum and Library.
