Chanasongkhram Sub District

DISTRICT: Phra Nakhon

POSTCODE: 10200

One of twelve sub-districts of Phra Nakhon District is Chana Songkhram. It is positioned where the Bang Lam Phu Canal meets the Chao Phraya River. It also shares its border with sister sub-district Talat Yoot which is where Khao San Road is located.

Sitting at exactly where the canal and the river meet are the Phra Sumen Fort and Santichaiprakarn Park. The fort is actually part of the park. The fort was built in 1783 and was intended to provide defense against an attack from the river. The fort was originally one of 14 city watch towers and now one of only two along with Mahakan Fort that is still standing. The fort itself is an octagonal bunker of brick and mortar that is strikingly white.

The rest Santichaiprakarn Park provides the only green area in this part of Bangkok. The park is known for hosting various activities and performances especially in the cooler months of November and December.  The park was built to honour the 60’th birthday of King Rama IX in 1999. The park is built on land that was previously a sugar factory. The park is a great place to relax amidst the tropical trees and enjoy the views of the Pinklao and Rama VIII bridges.

Just up from the park is the  Pipit Banglamphu Museum. In 2000, Kurusapha Printing House was likely going to be demolished. Local residents wanted to preserve the historic building which had stood since 1932. After several years, the building now a museum opened in 2014.
