Huai Khwang District

SUB DISTRICTS: Huai Khwang, Bang Kapi, Sam Sen Nok

AREA: 15.033 sq km (5.804 sq mi)

POPULATION: 81,515 (2017)

POSTCODE: 10310

The name Huai Khwang translates as barricade or creek. This is because in the past the area consisted mostly of wetlands, with many waterways and creeks that enabled travel by boat in the area. Today because of the settlement of many Chinese people, the district is sometimes known as New Chinatown as opposed to the traditional Chinatown in Yaowarat.

Huai Khwang has an excellent transportation network as it lies on the MRT line, and six stations are in the district, Phetchaburi, Phra Ram 9, Thailand Cultural Center, Huai Khwang, Sutthisan and Ratchadaphisek.

Many people come to Huai Khwang for the many entertainment venues that can be found in this inner-city district, including some of the famous Davis Group of massage salons.

The district also has many shopping outlets with the Central Plaza Grand Rama IX one of the very best malls. As it sounds the mall is to be found on the Rama IX Road, and is a nine storey building and its own MRT station in the basement.

As well as many great retail outlets there is also an SFX multi-screen cinema and a Robinsons department store.

Other places of interest in Huai Khwang are the Thailand Cultural Centre, Ratchada Grand Theatre (home of the famous Sian Niramit show), Royal City Avenue, and the delightful Ganesh Shrine which can be found near the MRT station.

Huai Khwang is certainly a highly interesting district for many reasons, and is a popular area to live due to its great transport links to the other parts of Bangkok.
