Makkasan Sub District

DISTRICT: Ratchathewi

Makkasan is one of four sub-districts that make up Ratchathewi District. It is the only one of the four sub-districts that does not have a BTS Skytrain station. The primary feature of the sub-district are two major intersections.

Makkasan takes its name from Makassar which was the capital of South Sulawesi in Indonesia. It was previously the home to the Makkasan people. The Makkasan are Muslims who came from Celebes to Siam in the King Narai reign. The Siamese - now Thai - called these people Khaek Makkasan where Khaek translates to guest.

Bangkok Dolls Shop and Museum makes handcrafted collectible Thai dolls. Bangkok Dolls began in 1957 started by Tongkorn Chandavimol. The dolls represent classical Thai dancers, historical figures and peasants of the Thai countryside. In addition to being able to purchase some of the dolls, there is a collection on display of dolls from around the world.

The Chinese Visa Application Service Center is located Makkasan. If you are planning a trip to China, this is the place to go. They are open from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, but best to submit your application before 11:00 am.
