Minburi District

SUB DISTRICTS: Saen Saep

AREA: 63.645 km2 (24.573 sq mi)

POPULATION: 141,750 (2017)

POSTCODE: 10510

Min Buri District started as a province, was relegated to an amphoe and then promoted to district. Originally established in 1901 under King Chulalongkorn it had three amphoes. Theses were Amphoe Khlong Sam Wa, Amphoe Saen Saep, Amphoe Nong Chok. Saen Saep remains as a subdistrict of Min Buri while Nong Chok is now a district itself as is Khlong Sam Wa.

Consistent with the poor economic time of the early 1930’s, Min Buri was split into three different amphoe, two as part of  Bangkok and one as part of Chachoengsao Province. The district has not changed structurally since 1997

Min Buri translates to city of fish. It is believed that this was chosen in part to pair with Thanyaburi province which translates to city of rice

Min Buri features the Kwan-Riam Floating Market which is regarded as one of the best floating markets in Bangkok. It is situated between two temples Wat Bampen-nua and Wat Bampen-Tai. There is a bridge that connects the two temples, and the market can be reached from either side.

The names Kwaan and Riam are well known in Thailand. They are the main characters in a novel later made in to the movie Plae Kao. It is rooted in Thai folklore and has been referred to as the Romeo and Juliet story of Thailand.

Because the market is fairly new, some tourists may feel it lacks the authenticity of older more established markets with a history of tradition. The feedback from visitors would suggest that the market has something for everyone.
