Phra Borom Maha Ratchawangis a sub-district of Phra Nakhon District. Phra Nakhon has the most sub-districts of any district in Bangkok with twelve. Phra Borom Maha Ratchawangis borders on the Chao Phraya River from Somdet Phra Pin Klao Road to where Rop Krung Canal joins the river. With a 2017 population of 3,953, it has 7.7% of the total population of the district.

The Tha Phra Chan of Thammasat University is one of two universities with campuses in the sub-district. Thammasat University also has campuses in Rangsit, Lampang and Pattaya. Thammasat is a public research university that was founded in 1934. It was initially called Thammasat University and Politics as the focus at that time was on teaching democracy. The Phra Chan campus offers an international bachelors degree program.

Silpakorn University has their Wang Tha Phra campus here as well. It was founded in 1943 by Corrado Feroci who was an art professor from Tuscany. He became a Thai citizen and took the name Silpa Bhirasri. Originally a fine arts school there are now over twelve faculties including Archaeology, Science, Engineering and Information Technology.

The Wang Tha Phra campus was the first one and covers 8 rai. There are two other campuses with one at Sanam Chandra Palace and The Information Technology Campus in Petchaburi.

The Petchaburi Campus opened in 1997. Between 2001 and 2002 additional faculties were added to Petchaburi covering Animal Sciences, Agricultural Technology. As at 2016 Silpakorn University had over 25,000 students.
