Prawet was previously part of Phra Khanong District and became a district itself in 1989. In 1994, it’s sub-district Suan Luang and additional parts of Prawet were reformed to make a new district of Sunan Luang. In 2005 there were plans to create the administrative area of Nakhon Suvarnabhumi around the new airport. Prawet was to have been one of the five districts of this area.
The main road in the district is Si Nakharin which was named after Princess Srinagarindra. There are many housing projects along this road. Seacon Square is a large indoor shopping mall on the road. Tesco Lotus and Paradise Park malls can be found further down the road. Paradise Park was previously named Seri Center and specialises in IT products among other things.
Onnut road also runs through the district and is attracting major automotive players. Manheim Auctions, an international automobile auction company has established their Asia Pacific headquarters here. The Soni Group of Companies, has opened a large auto showroom here and also established their corporate headquarters.
The district is known for Rama IX Park or Suan Luang Rama IX. It is a large park built to commemorate the 60’th birthday of King Bhumibol. It features a large reservoir named Traphang Kaeo. It plays an important part in flood control which is a frequent issue in Eastern Bangkok. The park also has beautiful botanical gardens and areas for playing recreational sport.
