The name Sala Thammasop means pavilion for sermons. Previously though, it was name Sala Tamsop or pavilion for funerals. This was because King Rama IV had ordered that Khlon Maha Sawat be dug along with salas or open pavilions. One of these. Salaya. is home to textbooks about traditional Thai medicine. There were also two salas specifically intended for the dead bodies of those who died digging the canal. The name was changed later as it is less depressing.
