DISTRICT: Bang Khun Thian
POSTCODE: 10150
Samae Dam can be found to the southwest of Bangkok and is a sub-district of Bang Khun Thian. It is one of the oldest parts of Bangkok and has the only seashore in Bangkok. Many people came to settle in Samae Dam to work on the land and of course to fish.
The coastline is over five kilometers long, and this muddy landscape
is home to a diverse biodiversity including shrimp farms and mangrove forests. The area around Samae Dam is the only way you can access the Gulf of Thailand from anywhere in Bangkok.
As you would expect Samae Dam is a very rural area and the housing in the area reflects this, and as for shopping there are not any malls or large stores. But what you will find are great local stores and markets selling locally grown produce and fish.
You can also find a few really great local fish restaurants selling the catch of the day. These are cheap and offer simple fare, just great fish served and cooked simply.
One of the notable attractions of the area is Wat Bang Kadi, that has two really great architectural buildings on its grounds. Other notable temples of interest are, Wat Kamphaeng, and Wat Kok.
Not far away from Samae Dam is a great floating market called Wat Sai, where many food and clothing stores can be found selling goods at more than reasonable prices. Over the past few years it has tended to attract many tourists so expect to haggle to get the prices Thai’s pay.
There are no connections to Bangkok by BTS or MRT so getting to and from the center of Bangkok can be a pain, therefore most people who live in the area also work there, so there are very few daily commuters.
