Sathon District

SUB DISTRICTS: Thung Wat Don, Yan NawaThung Maha Mek

AREA: 9.326 km2 (3.601 sq mi)

POPULATION: 79,624 (2017)

POSTCODE: 10120

Sathon district was originally part of the district of Yan Nawa. It was a branch district office of Yan Nawa serving three different sub-districts. In 1989m Sathon District was established and it included those areas previously served by the branch office. The district gets its name from Sathon Road and Khlong Sathong.

The Khlong was dug by a Chinese company and its owner was given the name Luang Sathon Racha Yut by King Chulalongkorn for his efforts. His former house has been designated as Sathon Mansion in Ban Rak District Both sides of the canal were referred to as Sathon Road.

Sathorn Road is considered to mark the boundary of the district. Interestingly, the Souther lane of the road is in the district of Sathon, On the other side of the canal, the Northern lane is actually located in the district of Bang Rak.

Sathon Road is home to many up-market hotels, two well known Catholic churches, the Blue Elephant cooking school and the unmistakable Robot Building. The Robot Building was designed at the request of the Bank of Asia to reflect modernisation and computerisation in banking by architect Sumet Jumsai. Sumet is said to have been inspired by his son’s toy robot The bank of Asia was acquired by United Overseas Bank in 2005 and the Robot Building now serves as their Bangkok headquarters.

The Blue Elephant Cooking School is not only a school, but also an elegant restaurant serving traditional royal cuisine in colonial style surroundings. Blue Elephant can also be found in Phuket as well as Europe.
