DISTRICT: Dusit
POSTCODE: 10300
Si Yaek Maha Nak is a sub-district of Dusit and is situated northwest of Central Bangkok. Its border is Phitsanulok Road with Suan Chit Lada sub-district.
The name Si Yaek Maha Nak translates as Maha Nak Four Corners and is actually a water intersection as formerly this vicinity was famous for its floating market.
Maha Nak is named after the canal which has a starting point at Khlong Rop Krung which was originally part of the moat which encircled the old city.
The canal systems were built during the reign of Rama I (King Phutthayotfa Chulalok), Rama III (King Nangklao, and Rama IV (King Mongkut). And during this time the canal network was the means of transport for nearly everybody.
The canal system also connected to Chachoengsao Province by means of boat and trade flourished between the capital and the outlying province.
Another tale why the area is named Si Yaek Maha Nak is that of Mae Nak Phra Khanong who is a famous Thai ghost. And she inflated her body at the place of Si Yaek Maga Nak to a gigantic size.
Today Si Yaek Maha Nak is an important market area and the markets of Maha Nak, and Saphan Khao can be found here. These are two of Bangkok’s largest wholesale markets and it is good to see the old history of commerce in the area is as strong as ever.
The transport network around the Si Yaek Maha Nak area is limited to one station of the MRT line at Bang Sue. There are however many piers for water taxis in the region that the Dusit District Chao Phraya Express Boat services, Thewes Pier, Payap Pier, and Kiakkai Pier.
Si Yaek Maha Nak is not really a place for tourists, and as such property is restricted to townhouses and traditional Thai houses.
