DISTRICT: Bang Khun Thian
POSTCODE: 10150
Tha Kham is one of the outlying sub-districts to the southwest of central Bangkok. It is part of the Bang Khun Thian district which occupies the only seashore in Bangkok.
This is quite a historical area as it is one of the oldest in Bangkok. Originally settlers came to the area to fish and live of the land and water.
The coastline is over five kilometers long, and this muddy landscape is home to a diverse biodiversity including shrimp farms and mangrove forests. The area around Tha Kham is the only way you can access the Gulf of Thailand from anywhere in Bangkok.
Interestingly around the shoreline you can find macaques who love to eat the local crabs, and anything else visitors bring them.
As you would expect Tha Kham is a very rural area and you will not find grand shopping malls or fancy condominiums. Instead there is a plethora of local shops and markets.
Also there are a few really great local fish restaurants selling the catch of the day. These are cheap and offer simple fare, just great fish served with piquant dips and vegetables.
Other notable places of interest in the area are, Wat Kamphaeng, Wat Kok, and Wat Bang Kradi.
Not far away is a great floating market called Wat Sai, where many food and clothing stores can be found selling goods at more than reasonable prices. Over the past few years it has tended to attract many tourists so expect to haggle to get the prices Thai’s pay.
Local to Tha Kham is Wat Hua Krabeu Riverside Market, a place where locals gather to eat delicious and cheap food and of course to chat about the important issues of the day.
Getting to and from the center of Bangkok can be a pain, so very few people commute into the city to work.
