Watratchabophit Sub District

Watratchabophit Sub District

DISTRICT: Phra Nakhon

POSTCODE: 10200

Wat Ratchabophit is one of twelve sub-districts that constitute Phra Nakhon District. Phra Nakhon has the most sub-districts of any district in Bangkok. Unlike some of the other sub-districts in Phra Nakhon, Wat Ratchabophit does not reach the Chao Phraya River. Instead it runs along the Rop Krung Canal. To get to the neighboring sub-district of Phra Borom Maha Ratchawang you need to cross the canal at the Pi Kun Bridge. On the other side of the canal is the Pig Memorial. Pi Kun Bridge essentially means bridge of the year of the pig.

The Trok Mor morning market is located in the centre of the sub-district. At a casual glance it may look any other market but do not be deceived. This market features fresh produce, fresh fish and seafood along with every imaginable food and desert to eat with very reasonable prices.

Given the name of the sub-district it should come as no surprise that it is the home of Wat Ratchabophit or Wat Ratchabophit Sathit Maha Simaram Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan. The temple was built in 1869 by King Rama V. The temples features a combination of Thai architecture blended with a more Western influenced interior. It may be the only temple of this style in Thailand

The Royal Cemetery is within the temple grounds. The cemetery serves as a columbarium for members of the family of King Rama V. The temple is open for visitors everyday from 8:00am to 5:00 pm and admission is free.
