Most people recognize Dong Muang district because of the airport, but this northerly district of Bangkok has a great deal more going for it than just planes.

Its old name Don I Yiao tells us something about this large area, as it translates into plateau of eagles due to its old landscape and the plethora of birds in the area.

The name was changed when King Vaijiravudh established the Royal Thai Airbase there.

Don Mueang’s main industry comes from the airport and the district has been a stronghold for the Pheu Thai Party (People’s Power Party) since the 2006 coup.

The district is mainly made up of small housing projects and local shops. There are some bigger malls such as Future at Rangsit, or if you want to hunt down IT stuff then Zeer at Ransit is a pretty good store.

Many visitors who come to the area not using the airport visit The Royal Thai Airport Museum on Phahonyothin Road which is just south of the domestic terminal of Don Mueang Airport.

Founded in 1952 the museum was established to preserve old planes and other memorabilia of the aviation history of Thailand. The museum houses some rare planes such as an FIIC, and one of only two surviving Japanese Tachikawa Ki 36 training planes.

The museum is also important at detailing the role of Thailand in WWII, when the Japanese Imperial forces invaded South Thailand in 1941. The fighting soon ceased and Thailand became a Japanese ally.
