เขตบางรัก แขวงสีลม

DISTRICT: Bang Rak

POSTCODE: 10500

Silom is one of Bangkok’s inner city sub-districts and it is part of Bang Rak district. The two most sophisticated mass transportation systems of Bangkok, the BTS and the MRT both have major stations in Silom which include, Silom and Sala Daeng.

At one END of Silom Road is the fantastic Lumphini Park, which brings greenery into what is one of the most built up areas of Bangkok. Towering office blocks vie for real estate against impressive condominium developments.

Silom is undoubtedly one of the most important financial districts in Bangkok, with many banks choosing to have their headquarters based there. Consequently, this is one of the most expensive areas to live in the whole of Bangkok.

After nightfall Silom changes its identity, the office workers go home and the pleasure seekers hit the streets. Heading down to Lumphini Park, the left hand side of Silom Road turn into a giant open air market, with stalls all the way up to Patpong Night Market.

The small sois off the main road contain many red light areas and for those easily offended is not the place to be. Patpong Market is a great place to get replica jeans and T-shirts, but expect to be hassled to go and visit one of the go go bars from energetic sales touts.

On the other side of Silom Road you can find Soi Convent which has a great choice of restaurants, bars, and even an Irish Pub.

Some of Bangkok’s classiest hotels are situated in Silom such as the Shangri-La and the Royal Orchid Sheraton. And they help form part of the skyline which includes the MahaNakhon Tower which is the tallest building in Thailand. Well worth seeing are also the State Tower and the Banyan Tree Building which offer fantastic views of the city from their roof-top bars and observation decks.

Down on street level there is a plethora of shops, in particularly jewelry stores, clothes and art galleries. Many of these stores can be found along Silom Road, along with department stores such as Robinsons and the Silom Complex.

The renovation of the Empire Tower, and the addition of the Cube, W Hotel, and Mahankorn Pavillion, makes the area around Chong Nonsi BTS a new gathering area known as SOLU.
