Phra Khanong Tai is one of only two sub-districts within Phra Khanong District. It shares borders with its sister sub-district Bang Chak. There is some debate about the origins of the word Khanong. Some believe it comes from Khmer which is their word for eyebrow, Alternatively, it may come from the word Khanon (without the G) which would mean customhouse.

Phra Khanong has some of its boundary on the Chao Phraya River. It was a strategic part of access to the sea in its early years. With a population of 21,146, Phra Khanong Tai has less than 24% of the total population of the district. Interestingly, the Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited which is a Thai energy company, is actually located in Phra Khanong Tai.

The real estate market in Phra Khanong Tai and the district is mixed in comparison to Bangkok as a whole. The annual growth rate for condos in the past year was 7.1% compared to 6.4% for all of Bangkok. Rental returns are also slightly higher. The average return for Bangkok has been 5.3% for the past year while Phra Khanong has returned 5.6% during the same period.

Owing to the many boundary changes over the years, the Khlong Toei Pier is actually in Phra Khanong and thus easily accessible from the sub-district. It is not really much of a pief, but more just a pontoon next to the river. You can catch a long-tail boat here to take you to the other side of the Chao Phraya River for as little as five baht
