Bang Mot is one of only two sub-districts belonging to Thung Khru. The other takes its name from the parent district. It is close to the Chao Phraya, though not actually bordering it. It does border Rat Burana as well as Chom Thong and Thong Khru.

Bang Mot has given its name to the Bang Mot tangerine which is grown in the area. Actually, it is not really a tangerine at all but a mandarin orange. The fruit was first grown here in 1924 and sue to the fertile soil in the area, the crops thrived. The soil had high levels of potassium which gave the fruit a slightly sweet and sour taste.

At its height, there were some 96 square kilometers of groves. Floods in 1967 killed a large number of trees. This made farmers wary of re-planting and this along with urban expansion reducing the available land though this iconic fruit is still grown in the region.

King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) calls Bang Mot home. Founded in 1960, it is the third oldest engineering school and seventh oldest university in Thailand. Focused on teaching and research, it is one of nine national research universities in Thailand.

The Thammaruksa flower can be found around the campus and is the official colour of the school. This is then reflected in the school colours.

The main campus in Bang Mot is along Prachauthit Road and comprises soe 52 acres. There are many faculties and schools covering fields from Engineering, Science, Information Technology and Field Robotics.
