AREA: 17.834 km2 (6.886 sq mi)

POPULATION: 126,824 (2017)

Phasi Charoen is located in the middle of the area to the west of the Chao Phraya River. The district was established as amphoe in 1899 and changed to a district in 1972.

The district takes its name from Khlong Phasi Charoen which links the Tha Chin River with Khlong Bangkok Yai. This was an interesting undertaking by Phra Phasi Sombat Boribun who later became Phraya Phison Sombat Boribun. He proposed to fund the project himself on the provision that he would be allowed to collect tolls. But his funding came as a result of a tax deduction and thus the canal became toll free. The project began in 1866 and took about 6 years to complete finishing in 1872. The canal is named after the man who initiated and oversaw the project.

There is a single BTS station serving Phasi Charoen which is the Bang Wa station. There is also the Khlong Phasi Charoen service which has one of it’s piers at the Bang Wa station.

There are over 10 wats in Phasi Charoen. The Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen is known for being the origin of The Dhammakaya Movement. It is a popular temple with wide support from prosperous community members.

The festival of Chak Phra is held each year on the 16th day of the 12th lunar month. The festival features boats adorned with flowers and carrying Buddhist relics from Wat Nang Chi to Wat Kai Tia and back again.
